Seal-less pump eliminates hydrogen peroxide leakage at BillerudKorsnäs
The Gävle plant produces liquid packaging board, WTL and kraft and sack paper.
Challenge
The bleaching process uses hydrogen peroxide, a highly reactive medium with a well-known challenge: its ability to penetrate small leaks.
The plant experienced problems with leakage, probably linked to shaft seals in existing pumps. Even small leaks of hydrogen peroxide can adversely affect both the working environment and operational safety.
The challenge was to find a solution that:
- eliminates the risk of leakage
- can handle chemically demanding media
- ensures stable and long-term operation
Solution
The solution was a magnetic drive centrifugal pump from CP Pump Systems - model MKP.
Unlike traditional pumps, the magnetic drive design has no shaft seal. This means that the pump is completely seal-free, which eliminates the risk of hydrogen peroxide leakage.
After installation, leakage problems ceased and the working environment around the pumps improved significantly.
Today, the solution is well established at the site, where a total of 14 magnetic drive MKP pumps from CP Pump Systems are used in various applications, including:
- peroxide (5-50 %)
- enzyme
- additional chemicals
- circulation in turpentine scrubbers
Outcome
The implementation of magnetic drive pumps has brought several clear benefits:
- Elimination of leakage problems
- Improving the working environment

- Long-term and robust solution for chemically demanding media
The solution has proven to be both effective and sustainable over time - and has become a natural part of the plant's process.
