Hose pumps for demanding industrial applications

In hose pump, also known as peristaltic pump, is a type of positive displacement pump used to pump liquids with a wide range of properties. Thanks to their design, hose pumps are particularly suitable for viscous, abrasive and particulate media and for applications where high suction power is required.

Lyma offers a wide range of hose pumps for industrial processes in the chemical, energy, mining and food industries, among others.

What is a hose pump?

The principle of a positive displacement pump is based on the fact that a defined volume of liquid is trapped and conveyed from inlet to outlet independently of back pressure. Other examples of positive displacement pumps are gear pumps and piston pumps.

In a hose pump, the liquid is completely enclosed in a flexible hose, which means that the medium never comes into contact with components other than the inside of the hose.

How does a peristaltic pump work?

In a peristaltic pump, the hose is mounted in a circular pump housing. A rotor with thrust shoes or rollers compresses the hose point by point as it rotates. When the hose is squeezed, the fluid is forced forwards in the direction of rotation.

Once the pressure shoe has passed the suction side, the hose opens again and new medium is sucked in. This movement is called peristalsis, which gave the pump its name.

Advantages of hose pumps

  • Very high suction capacity
  • Can handle dry running
  • Withstands abrasive, abrasive and particulate media
  • The liquid only comes into contact with the inside of the hose
  • Minimal risk of leakage
  • Can run continuously or at indexed speed
  • Suitable also for simple dosing applications

Thanks to their leak-proof design, hose pumps can create a strong negative pressure and handle delivery pressures of up to approximately 13 bar in continuous operation.

Applications for hose pumps

Hose pumps are used in a wide range of industries and applications, including:

  • Breweries and food industry
  • Power plants and energy installations
  • Waste facilities and treatment plants
  • Chemical and process industries
  • Mining and quarrying

Typical media pumped are:

  • lime slurry
  • slurry and sludge
  • abrasive liquids with particles
  • highly viscous and sticky media

Designs and materials

At Lyma you will find both stationary and portable hose pumps:

  • Portable hose pumps: up to about 18 m³/h and 2 bar
  • Stationary hose pumps: up to about 50 m³/h and 13 bar

The hoses can be supplied in several materials, for example:

  • natural rubber
  • nitrile
  • CSM / Hypalon

The choice of hose material is crucial for service life and chemical resistance when pumping aggressive media.

Important to consider when choosing a hose pump for aggressive liquids

When pumping chemicals and other aggressive media, it is important to:

  • choose the right hose material based on chemical compatibility
  • ensure that the liquid does not come into contact with other components
  • remember that the hose is the most worn component of the pump

For applications with very high dosing accuracy requirements, diaphragm or piston diaphragm pumps may be a better option.
